Last Fall, long term French restaurant and a staple of Adams Morgan, La Fourchette was put on the market — the restaurant/bar plus the apartment upstairs is listed for $2,900,000. Currently the owners Chef Pierre Chauvet and hostess Jacqueline Chauvet are currently reviewing two attractive offers and hope to decide and settle by this summer.
The restaurant has a storied past. The Chauvets immigrated from La Rochelle, France almost 40 years ago. Opened in 1978, the family-run restaurant has seen the drastic transformation of a debris-strewn community to become the first DC neighborhood to experience gentrification and finally one of the top nightlife spots in the city. But with the growth of U Street, H Street and 14th, that distinction has now been usurped to the string of new, vibrant competition all over the city.
Just up the hill near where the Adamo Condos are rising, the Popals who fled their native Afghanistan in the early 80’s will be transforming long-term fixture Napoleon Bistro to a restaurant serving authentic fare from their homeland.
The Popals already own Cafe Bonaparte and Malmaison with the departure of La Fourchette and Napoleon, Mintwood Place will be the last French restaurant standing in AM.
