A 5K run kicked off on labor Day to celebrate the opening of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.
Thousands of people showed up to run, walk, skip over the bridge over the 5K course that covered parts of South Capitol Street, SE.
A community celebration is also taking place featuring live entertainment and food.
The new bridge will include three above-deck arches, four pedestrian overlooks, and two piers that will appear to float when looking from the Anacostia waterfront. It will have six traffic lanes and much-improved accommodations for pedestrians, bicycles, and other non-vehicle mobility devices
Mayor Muriel Bowser will join members of the Douglass family and other guests for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday.
The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge has been under construction for three years and will open to cars this week.
